I always suggest setting up your phone before you arrive in Korea so you land ready to go. Here’s what I do:

1. Download the key Korea travel apps (Naver Map, Kakao T, Papago, KorailTalk, etc.) in advance.

3. Set Papago offline. You’ll thank yourself when you’re stuck with no signal.
4. Add your card details. Kakao T and Klook let you link cards, but if it doesn’t work, no problem. You can still pay cash in taxis.

Best Korea Map Apps: Naver Map vs KakaoMap vs Google Maps

Here’s the truth. Google Maps doesn’t work properly in Korea. It’s fine for finding a place, but terrible for directions and transit. If you try to follow it in Seoul, you’ll probably get lost.

Instead, you’ll want Naver Map and KakaoMap. They’re the two main map apps Koreans use, and both have English versions.

• Naver Map is simple and great for English search. I like it for walking routes and finding nearby places.
• KakaoMap shines for real-time bus info and push alerts. Perfect if you’re relying on buses.
• Google Maps is ok if you just need to quickly check an address, but don’t trust it for step-by-step directions.

Best Korea Train Apps and Bus Apps

Korea’s high-speed trains are fantastic. The KTX can take you from Seoul to Busan in under three hours, and it’s comfortable too.

To book tickets, the best Korea train app is KorailTalk. It has an English setting, shows real-time schedules, and lets you buy tickets on your phone. No need to stand in line at the station.

For buses, I usually recommend Tmoney GO or Kobus. Both cover intercity and express buses, and you can compare routes and prices in seconds.

Best Taxi Apps in Korea

In Korea, the go-to taxi app is Kakao T. It’s in English, works almost everywhere, and lets you pay in-app or in cash.

The app is easy to figure out: type in your destination, choose your car, and watch as your driver comes to you. It even shows you the license plate, which makes finding your ride much less stressful in busy areas.

I’ve also used Uber Taxi in Seoul, and it worked fine. The availability isn’t as wide as Kakao T, but if you already have Uber on your phone, it can be a good backup.

If you’re heading to Jeju island, Kakao T is especially handy since public transport on the island isn’t as frequent.

Money and Currency Apps

You will probably need to check prices often since Korean won can feel confusing at first.

I usually use XE Currency to do quick conversions. It is simple and works offline if you update the rates before leaving Wi-Fi.

If you are traveling with a card like Wise or another travel debit card, the app is also useful. You can see how much you are spending in KRW and get alerts every time you use it. I find this really helps me keep track of my budget while I am away.

Best Translation App for Korea

I always recommend Papago because it handles Korean better than other apps. The translations for menus and signs are usually clearer, and the offline mode is very useful when you do not have data.

At the same time, I have used Google Translate in Korea too and it definitely helped in many situations. The camera translation feature is quick and easy, especially if you are already used to it.

I think it is worth having both apps on your phone so you can switch between them when you need to.
